Burned Teen's Medical Records To Remain Sealed

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A Broward judge has ruled that the medical records of Michael Brewer, the Deerfield Beach teen who was set on fire by several classmates, will remain sealed.

On Monday, Brewer was in the court room when the judge denied the defense's request for the records. Defense attorneys had been seeking the medical records and toxicology report; the judge did not rule on the toxicology report.

Brewer, who celebrated his 16th birthday in October this month, was doused with rubbing alcohol and set on fire in October 2009 in apparent dispute over a video game and a bicycle. He survived by jumping into a nearby swimming pool. He suffered burned over 60-percent of his body. He spent months rehabilitating at Jackson memorial Hospital Burn Center in Miami. He now lives in Palm Beach County.

The three teens accused of setting him on fire; Jesus Mendez, Matthew Bent and Denver Jarvis remain in jail charged as adults with attempted murder. Each of the teens faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
