The Urban Legend Ends

GAINESVILLE (CBS4) - For the second year in a row, Urban Meyer is stepping down as the head coach of the University of Florida, according to the Associated Press.

"At this time in my life, however, I fully grasp the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one," Meyer said in a statement released by the school Wednesday. "But, after spending more than two decades motivating and celebrating the young men I've been so proud to coach, I relish the opportunity to cheer for my three terrific kids as they compete in their own respective sports."

After last season, Meyer resigned for one day due to health problems before coming back. He suffered through multiple ailments and missed out on spring recruiting while he took some time off from head coaching to recover.

Meyer has been one of the most successful head coaches in Florida history. He's compiled a 64-15 record as head coach and won 2 national championships.

But, after losing defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and quarterback Tim Tebow after last season, the Gators fell on hard times this season.

The Gators finished the season with a disappointing 7-5 record in 2010 and were second in SEC East. The 2010 record was the worst in his career as a Division I head coach.

Speculation about a replacement for Meyer will likely have Strong at the top of the list. He took a bad Louisville team and made them into a bowl-eligible team in one season.
