UM Accused Of Using Credit Checks To Discriminate

MIAMI (CBS4) - The University of Miami is accused of using credit checks to discriminate against minorities who are applying for jobs.

A federal lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of Loudy Appolon, an African-American woman who claims she didn't get a job at UM's medical school because of her credit history.

The suit, which has potential to be a class action filing, argues that there is no link between credit history and job performance and using a credit check in a hiring decision is a violation of the Civil Rights Act.

The suit seeks to represent all similar unsuccessful job applicants since June 24, 2009.

The university declined to comment.
