Crowbar Killing Sparks Protest Outside Quick Shop

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) -- Dozens gathered outside a Southwest Miami-Dade convenience store Friday night to protest the brutal crowbar beating of a man by a store employee.

Demonstrators say Akillarve Oliver, 34, was beaten to death because he was black.

Miami-Dade Police spokesman Roy Rutland is reporting that Oliver went into the Quick Shop at 9720 SW 168th Street at 5:45 pm Nov. 18 and allegedly began verbally attacking the store owners.

According to arrest records Oliver allegedly called the clerk a racial slur, suggested he go back to his country and threatened to do unprintable things to his mother and sisters.

An off duty Miami-Dade Corrections officer and other patrons tried to calm the situation down, and Oliver left the store.

It is suggested that Oliver's rage stemmed from money the clerk may owe him.

Oliver came back a short time later and began his tirade once again. As he was being escorted out of the store by the corrections officer, Nabil Sulaiman, 19, allegedly armed himself with a bottle and hit him.

Police reports say 3 other employees became involved and as Oliver began to defend himself Ragheb M. Sulaiman, 24, allegedly hit him over the head with a crowbar, killing him.

The store's video camera has recorded the fight.

Ragheb Sulaiman has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Nabil Sulaiman faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Both are in custody.

Miami-Dade Police are investigating.
