Top Upcoming Theater Productions In South Florida

The upcoming winter season of theater productions arriving to South Florida will be difficult to disappoint. There seems to be something for everyone. There are exacting parodies of recent Broadway performances, to productions of award-winning, classic children's animated films. Theatergoers can take a historical journey through time with the musical version of Ragtime and there's even dinner theater on the horizon at the Broward Center.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is the hit Broadway musical based on the Academy Award-winning animated film. The story is one of a young woman from a small provincial town, Belle, and the Beast who is actually a young prince transformed by a spell. If he can love and be loved, the curse will be broken and he will be transformed back from a beast. The musical is filled with wonderful delights including music from the hit film, entertaining characters and truly incredible set and costume design.

Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre welcomes "Ragtime," a musical based on the novel written by E.L. Doctorow. The show tells the story of upper class citizens living in the suburbs, African-Americans and immigrants from Eastern Europe in the early 1900s during a period referred to as Ragtime. Each of these groups of people is represented by a single character – Mother, Coalhouse Walker, Jr. and Tateh, respectively. The musical features an expansive cast including actors portraying historical figures, a Tony Award-winning musical score and plenty of excitement.

The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center welcomes "Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking!" Gerard Alessandrini's show is even a favorite among critics with its impressively funny parodies, spot-on impressions and wild costumes. The musical pokes fun of a number of popular and recent Broadway shows including "The Book of Mormon," "Death of a Salesman," "Kinky Boots" and "Matilda." "Forbidden Broadway" is the recipient of several awards including the Outer Critics Circle Award and the Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre (2006).

Disney's "The Lion King" has wowed Broadway audiences since 1997 and the show arrives to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for a run. The play is based on the wonderful Disney animated film of the same name featuring a plot centered on the rich and colorful characters of an African animal kingdom. The musical dazzles with beautiful singing, some of the finest and most visually arresting costumes, breathtaking choreography and more. The award-winning production features hit songs from the film including "The Circle of Life."

The Broward Center's Abdo New River Room offers a fitting venue for "Fully Committed." Dinner and a show are combined with an entertaining comedy based on desperate restaurant-goers pulling out all of the stops for coveted dinner reservations. It's a one-man show featuring actor John Manzelli who plays a total of 40 characters. Tapas, drinks and table service are available to be enjoyed one hour before the show.
