Top Library Programs For Kids In South Florida

With the invention of iPads, e-readers and smartphones, checking out books from the library is becoming less and less common. Libraries have had to invent new ways to bring customers into the library. Reading programs, 3D printing, story time for little ones and even the use of dogs are just a few ways that county libraries are getting the younger generation interested in reading. Check out the offerings below and perhaps there will be something useful at the local library in your area.

publiclibraryhours.comThe Golden Glades Branch of the Miami/Dade County Library System will be presenting a 3D Printing Session on Tuesday, October 27th from 4:00 - 7:00pm. Attendees aged 12-18 years old will learn how to design objects that can be printed using a 3D printer. This class is a hands-on class and all attendees will be interacting with the instructors. One designer from the class will have their project printed at the end of the session. Registration is required as this class fills up fast.

www.mdpls.orgBeginning Thursday, November 5, 2015 and continuing for 10 weeks, children ages 5-18 are invited to participate in the Tinkering With Tech program. This class introduces children to the fundamentals of computer programming. From 4-5:50pm, children will learn about computer programming through the use of fun games, interesting projects and engaging group discussions. Since there are only 10 seats available for each class, pre-registration is suggested. Also, attendees must commit to being present for all 10 weeks of the program.

www.broward.orgThe Children's Services Council of Broward County has partnered with Hallandale Beach Library to offer an afterschool study workshop for local children. Children ages 6-12 years can come to the library for the Afterschool@Your Library program from 2:00-5:30pm each week for homework help and for reading practice. Volunteers will be available to assist students with reading, math, and language arts. Seating is limited so it is important to pre-register for this program.

On Wednesday, November 25, 2015, from 10:30am - 11:30am, the library will be presenting Every Day Heroes, where doctors, nurses, police officers, and firemen will come and talk to children about the importance of the job they perform. After the speakers have finished telling their stories, children will participate in a craft time where they will be able to create a craft related to the profession of one of the speakers. This is a one-time session that is part of the library's weekly Story Time sessions. Different Story Time sessions are presented each week, so check the library's website for information on upcoming programs.

This reading program is designed to increase the literacy levels of children aged 19 months up to 8 years of age. Children will read to therapy dogs that have been trained to be literacy mentors. The children may bring a book from home or choose a book from the library. This is an ongoing program at the Miami Beach Regional Library.
