Top Family-Friendly Museum Exhibits In South Florida

This summer offers several wonderful special exhibits for children that the entire family may enjoy. From an interactive museum experience made possible by Sesame Street to a swashbuckling pirate scene complete with theater performances and live pirates, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained. Some of the offerings even come free of charge including a special planetarium experience at the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science.

Science has never more fun than at the interactive and ever-evolving Museum of Discovery & Science. Late May until early September brings a special science exhibit for the entire family, Sesame Street Presents: The Body. The exhibition is as interactive as any aspect of the museum with everything from puzzles and games to videos and colorful demonstrations. Sesame Street Muppets will also be on hand to help children learn more about the parts and systems of the body, how they work and how to keep healthy. Elmo himself will be on site every Saturday morning from the May 30 to August 15 for a live meet and greet with a different body learning theme each week.

Summer Time Moonlight Sea Turtle Walks

Nature lovers have the special treat of a late night sea turtle experience with the Museum of Discovery & Science every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night June 2 through July 9. Each evening begins with a turtle learning session at the museum with an interactive experience to get familiar with freshwater, saltwater, land species and the resident one year old Loggerhead sea turtle. Guests learn about the history of turtles, the truth about common myths, nesting practices, threats to their existence and conservation efforts. The yearly event for participants 9 years of age and older then continues on for a one to two mile walk on Fort Lauderdale Beach in search of sea turtles in their natural habitats. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own snacks. Turtle sightings cannot be guaranteed for each walk but the experience is always an enlightening, entertaining and educational opportunity.

Never short on adventure experiences, Miami Children's Museum presents Pirate Island through early September. Pirate Island is available at no additional cost with museum admission. The daily adventure features pirate-themed games, storytelling, theater and live pirates in action. Miami Children's Museum is also home to a number of permanent exhibitions including All About Art, World Cultures and the Health & Wellness Center.

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science presents Fabulous First Fridays featuring activities for guests of all ages. On June 5, guests may enjoy a complimentary planetarium star show, a complimentary rooftop telescopic observation session at the Weintraub Observatory and numerous interactive activities. There is even a family-friendly laser show on view at 8 p.m. The Pop Laser Show features the latest technology in the dome. More mature audiences may continue to enjoy laser shows throughout the night with the best of the Beatles, U2, Pink Floyd and Bob Marley displaying late into the night.

The Museum of Science and Discovery hosts a special two-day event on May 30 and 31 celebrating the awesome power of nature. Special guest Jose Muniz of Amazing Butterflies will be on hand to help release winter's caterpillars as they complete their metamorphoses and transform into elegant, colorful butterflies. Amazing Butterflies is a company that releases butterflies for special occasions such as wedding ceremonies and they'll be hosting a special raffle in which a few local guests will go home with butterflies of their own. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the Tower Garden to learn the latest and greatest in sustainable gardening methods and hydroponics for healthier living. Both activities will take place in the museum's backyard.
