Best Summer Reading Events For Kids In South Florida

School is out and the last thing that parents want is for their children to forget everything they learned in school this year. That's why South Florida offers many options for children interested in reading. South Florida libraries have plenty of programs designed to fit any skill level and any age range. Alternatively, you can head to your local bookstore and meet your favorite author. The options are only limited by your imagination and your busy schedule.

Miami Dade Public Library Systems offers a Summer Reading Program for children. This year's theme is "Dig Into Reading!" Most of the Miami-Dade branches carry this nationwide program and they have either their registration or kickoff on June 7th or 8th. The California Club branch, in particular, has a celebration to commemorate the start of the program featuring stories and crafts. Some the books featured involve interactive corresponding activities like doing arts and crafts featured in one of the assigned book or kids can watch video interviews of the author discussing their book.

Like OMG teen queens, it's time to scream. Sara Shepard, author of "Pretty Little Liars," Katie Sise, fashionista and author of "Creative Girl: The Ultimate Guide For Turning Talent and Creativity Into A Real Career" and Sarah Strohmeyer, author of "The Cinderella Pact," are coming to town for a book signing you can't miss. Shepard will be signing the 13th installment of her of "Pretty Little Liars" series while Strohmeyer will be promoting her first teen novel called "How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True." It's triple the fun and an opportunity to meet the mind behind your favorite teen novels.

Like Miami-Dade County, Broward County also offers the "Dig Into Reading!" summer program, but its list of events is extensive. At various Broward locations, children ages five to 12 can participate in the "Wag and Tales" program where children read aloud to dogs provided by the Humane Society. Children can also participate in "Mother Goose Storytime" with advance registration. There are also events for teen and children of any age. Times and dates vary depending on location.

If you are a teen or have a teen that's interested in otherworldly reads, then this event is for you. Teens get to meet the authors Anne Banks ("Of Triton"), Leigh Bardugo (author of "Siege and Storm," the follow-up to "Shadow and Bone"), Jessica Brody ("Unremembered"), Emmy Laybourne ("Monument 14" series) and newcomer Gennifer Albin who is debuting her book, "Crewel." This is more of an event for the Twilight crowd, but you might see a boy or two in attendance. Be sure to line up early to reserve your spot and get a glimpse of your favorite authors.
