Income Tax Fraud
Inmates at the Zephyrhills Correctional Facility have not only had their freedom taken away, but their identity too. One of the former corrections officers at the facility has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for stealing the prisoners’ identities.
It’s well known that Miami, and South Florida in general, is a hot bed for income tax fraud and identity theft.
A Florida prison guard pleaded guilty to charges in connection to stealing personal information from state corrections databases. The guard allegedly filed 182 fraudulent income tax returns using the stolen information in order to get refunds.
The acting head of the IRS announced a massive national crackdown is underway to prevent billions of dollars in taxpayer refunds from being stolen nationwide.
Tax day is almost here and that means tax return identity theft is also in full swing. Memorial Hospital has been the latest target and Friday, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is introducing legislation to target the growing popularity of tax return identity theft.
