Just in time for the Monday morning commute, I-595 at University Drive is open for business – for the most part.
It’s mission accomplished. Florida Department of Transportation construction crews successfully lifted a five million pound flyover ramp on I-595 over the weekend to make way for additional lanes underneath.
Big changes are coming to I-595 in the coming weeks. As of Sunday night the on-ramp to the highway from westbound State Road 84 was permanently closed.
A $1.2 billion makeover of I-595 is moving right along, in fact parts are the project have been completed ahead of schedule.
Drivers traveling westbound on I-595 no longer have to get off at Pine Island Road if they want to get to Nob Hill Road.
Drivers traveling westbound on I-595 on Monday morning will notice two new ramps are open. At 5 a.m., construction crews will open a new off-ramp to Nob Hill and a new entrance from State Road 84.
The first new ramp of the I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project will open to drivers Thursday night.
Drivers who have been zigging and zagging on I-595 for the last year and half as construction crews shift lanes to make way for new ramps and express lanes will have a new hassle to deal with beginning in July – ramp closures.
