lorida is the only state in the U.S. that has extensive shallow coral reef formations near its coasts and Nova Southeastern University wants to make sure this unique Florida resource is protected.
Uncle Sam is pitching in to help save the coral reefs off South Florida and the Keys. Since 2009. the American Recovery and Restoration Act of 2009 has provided more than $3 million to grow about 30,000 threatened staghorn and elkhorn coral colonies in underwater nurseries.
Federal stimulus money is being used to help stimulate the growth of coral reef along Florida shores in a massive restoration effort.
