Fire Extinguisher That Started It All
July 26 - 6:30 p.m.: Friday evening, police said Vargas set fire to thousands of dollars from his bank account in the Hialeah apartment he shared with his elderly mother. (Source: CBS4)

Victims: Piscotti Family
Minutes later, the building managers, Italo and Samira Pisciotti, run to the apartment with a fire extinguisher. Vargas shoots them as they exit. They were both killed. The couple — Italo, 79, and Samira, 69 — managed the aging, five-story, beige building and lived in apartment 316, one floor below. (Source: CBS4)

Apartment Balcony
July 26 - 7:00 p.m.: Vargas goes onto a balcony and starts shooting at firefighters rushing to the scene of the fire. (Source: CBS4)

Vargas fired 10-20 shots from the balcony into the street. One of them hit Gavilanes, 33, as neighbors said he was returning home from his 9-year-old son's boxing practice. He yelled at his son to run and managed to make it inside his building, where he then collapsed as his son screamed in horror, witnesses said. Gavilanes was killed. 7:30 p.m.: Vargas forces his way into a third floor apartment and murders the building's maintenance man Patricio Simono. Vargas then moved through the family's apartment where Merly Niebles and her daughter were hiding in the bathroom with the door shut. The gunman fired through the door, killing both. SWAT Floor Plan In Apartment

The hostages, kneeling on the floor and terrified, beg for their lives while Vargas points a gun at them. 3. From an adjacent balcony, the police hurl a flashbang grenade. 4. Vargas is distracted for a millisecond. 5. Officers with shields hustle the hostages out. 6. Vargas opens fire, but the bullets get embedded in the police shields and vests. 7.
