why does everyone assume that the hispanic vote consists only of the cuban population. Why are they only mentioned?

This is because, in South Florida, the majority of the Hispanic population is Cuban. It is not meant to be derogatory in any way. This is just the way it is.

I believe they always mention Cuban vote because they are organized and make themselves heard and take responsability as Americans.
Now it might change the status of the hispanic vote as many sencond generation latinos are of voting age and they are aware of their duties as citizens of this great country they will be participating in the process and vote. The press should not use their usual inuendo of describing the Hispanics as automatically democrats, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, we hispanics are realizing that the Democratic Party needs to keep a portion of the population poor in order for the Democratic Party to survive, we do not want to be that group, we are entrepreneurs we are capable of making it on our own, we prefer they gives as the tools to succeed not keeps us under wealthfare handouts… Press on alert you need to change your tune.

Because Cubans can vote as quickly as in 2 years from the day they set foot off the raft. Other hispanic immigrants have to go though a lenghty immigration process to obtain first a Green Card (3 to 7 years or more) and then wait 5 years to apply for citizenship. This makes for an average stay of 8 to 15 years living in the US before they are able to cast a vote. This waiting period makes assimilation more likely for the non cuban group.

About not wanting to learn English. Most of the Americans that I met in Europe don’t bother to learn the local language and want the natives to speak to them in American .

An whose fault is that? It’s this country of ours fault. Is
the inmigration policy. Is the politics of the land. Is everybody’s fault. We all should help them to learn how to behave in this their new land -’cause they’re not leavin- or get used to it. By the way bananas are very good. I love banamas!!!.

Cubans are not the latin/hispanic majority but the have highest number of registered voters, must of them republican. The reason: To do what they cannot do in their land. Be in charge, on top, control their destiny. BE THE MAN! Other inmigrants? They can always go back to their countries. Cubans feel they have to be here. They don’t want to go back to a banrupt and decrepit country.

Because other inmigrants feel that no matter who’s in power they are better off here than in their country of origin. Also most of them are uneducated in the process and feel their vote is not necessary. They think that because in their countries elections are a farse so it must the same here.So let the cubans vote and elect whoever they want. They are more interested in what is going on in their country, with their families left behind, etc. than with the country that is giving them everything they never got there. Voting should be mandated to all citizens and not just a choice. That way we all will share the blame or praise of the decision.

    What the moderate thinker said.

  11. I think it is for multiple reasons. First, there is a large population of people of Cuban heritage in South Florida and numbers are important. Second, the Cuban community has, in years past, created and supported community and political organizations to ensure they have an active voice. I can’t say I’ve heard as much from Caribbean, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or South-American Hispanic groups. That is not to say they don’t exist, but they’ve not been as vocal for as long as the Cuban affiliated groups. These are my thoughts and I hope it helps.

  13. Both of the above replies are narrow minded and ignorant responses. Knee jerk replies that do not address the issues serve no purpose and only show either bigotry or ignorance.
The Cuban population seems to be the majority of Spanish speaking voters, whether be they be 1st or even 3rd generation Americans of Cuban heritage, therefore the public and powers that be designate or identify with them rather than recognize just as written the so called Hispanic Vote.

because they ALL behave the same: they do not want to learn English, they come here with their 3rd World habits of turning the place they live into dumps (because it feels like home to them), etc.
