Broward County jail takes money from inmate accounts without telling the inmate it is there for them. Shouldn't this be considered illegal?

My son is in County jail and twice I have put money in an account for him and the jail doesn’t tell him it is there, and they take from it daily(8 to 10 $’s a day)! They don’t let the depositor know this either. This is stealing. They need to relax communication with families also, as you can only visit one day a week, for 2 hours.

  1. Will the person in jail have to pay back the money that they owe for the uniform and daily charges when they get out? What if they have now lost their job and no funds to pay for any of it?

  3. @Anonymous, Who really TAUGHT their Kids to commits Crimes? You sound like a total FOOL! Almost all Kids at sometime does something STUPID, More got away with it than has been caught,Thesr’s Doctors, Lawyers, Judges etc…..That have all be in the SYSTEM for CRIME? I am so glad you are so UPSTANDING!

  4. Why don’t more people declare themselves indigent and avoid improper charges?

In America, amazingly, we still have no debtors prisons and if you are destitute, meaning that you have no tangible assets and no income , you cannot be jailed for non-payment of debts. The corrupt top cops and jailers who manipulate the system to make big money for their agency or themselves can make a policy of charging for inmate necessities, but they have to provide them anyway.

They cannot leave you naked and without soap and the basic needs for a human being and cannot punish you for not being able to pay. Let them send bills and ignore them and protest any credit issues ; there is no state or federal law that compels payment of jail fees for services that the state is mandated to perform as a part of it’s duty to prisoners. It is a racket: They bill you and hope you will pay, and make it hard on you if you are in jail and not making a profit for them, but in the end it has no teeth.

You will never find yourself standing in front of a judge for being destitute alone, it is not legal or decent or the hallmark of a free people. If the bankers and corporations and JAILS can lock you up for being poor then we are all slaves, just waiting for when the money runs out. These jail fees are ridiculous, especially when there are sop many DISMISSALS of cases that should never have been brought and were the product of police misconduct or ignorance of the law.

Cops mischarge and arrest people knowing that it will get thrown out and has no real legal basis, and the cop does not give a damn about what it costs the taxpayers, because all he cared about was showing someone he was the last word and had the power to make your life miserable. Cops fail to show for court and don’t even have to explain why they arrested someone with no real grounds..they get off scot free while the victim citizen has to suffer in jail and all that goes with an arrest only to have it dismissed, but the horror and indignity goes on.

Do not assume that because you are in jail you are guilty…that is for a jury, not a cop or jailer, and to punish an inmate by trying to take his commissary away to pay for necessities is shameful and a scam and a racket. Follow the money and see where it goes, and how much is diverted every year. Awful system.

  5. Seems to me that government, on all levels, is going a little crazy with fees. We have a fee for license plates, far in excess of their cost I may add, fees for entering parks, fees for basically all services, and on and on. My question is this, what the heII do our taxes pay for? We have federal, state and local gasoline taxes in some localities as well as excise taxes on petroleum products to pay for roads, but then license plate fees, tolls etc. That is but one example. We also are taxed on money used to pay taxes, look at sales taxes, in some places as much as ten percent of what is left after withholding taxes and other deductions. by being being taxed on your net pay it increases the net rate. This is true with many other taxes, fees and charges as well. Another favorite scam of government is green fees, environmental not golf. These charges seem sometimes as if they were simply made up out thin air. Anything for a buck, your buck that is, how else are they supposed to buy the votes that keep them in power? If you are single and make a decent wage I challenge you to do the math. If you get to spend 40% of what you earn you are very lucky indeed, and still those who pay nothing and those buying their votes want more and call you cheap and claim you don’t pay your fair share when 47% pay no federal taxes what so ever. Ridiculous and a scam on the American people. This inmates “fees” are no doubt already paid for with taxes, they always had been, this just government double charging, read theft. In this case because they hold all the cards, in many other cases they get away with robbing us simply because we let them. We have the wrong people in the jail if you ask me. We need to change this.

If you want your son to have money while he is in jail, first he needs to find out what his balance is, it IS negative, because he owes for things that he has not paid, booking fee, uniform fee, medical fee, daily fee, etc. Then he needs to tell you what his balance will be on the day he is to order commissary. Then you need to put that amount, plus any accureing charges so the balance is piad in full including the day that he orders commisary and the amount of days from when he orders until it is charged to his account, then add that amount to the amount you want him to have ON the day he orders commisary. so that ON the day he orders commisary there is still money left when it comes to order and be charged. When he is released from jail he will still owe money, because he HAS to pay for everything he gets, including (food, board, medical charges, etc) daily charge. NOTHING is free in jail. It would be best if you taught him to NOT COMMIT crimes.

  7. Best of luck to you and your son.

  8. This is not stealing. The jail charges for uniforms, and other daily and not daily charges. Your son gets a reciept that is delivered with the daily mail when you put money in his account.
If you go to Broward Sheriff’s office.com ,there is a whole section on jail inmates and money.
I am sorry to say but your son’s in county jail, not at the marriot.. He can also loose visiting previliges.. Oviously your son is over 18 and the jail will not tell you anything . If your son wants you to know something he has to find out and then tell you..

Everything you do or get in jail there is either a charge for it, or it is a privilage..Priviliges are earned, and you can loose the right to have them if the inmate gets into trouble.
It sounds to me like your son needs to communicate with you better. Your son has to learn the trick or timing of money being put into his account on certain days so he can order what he wants, and there is no money left for the fees of the jail. They all know it in there, but I do not know the trick ..Tell him to ask around.
SOunds like your son may be keeping you in the dark somewhat..Please go over to BSO.com and read about being in jail and all the information,
