The Miami Dade Expressway Authority announced Friday that all southbound lanes will be closed from Southwest 88th Street/Kendall Drive to Florida’s Turnpike as workers install drainage equipment. The single lane closures will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday and all lanes will close by 10 p.m.

They will reopen Monday at 5:30 a.m. To access Florida’s Turnpike, drivers will be allowed to exit at Southwest 88th Street/Kendall Drive and follow detour signs.

The entrance ramp that leads southbound on the Don Shula Expressway will be closed as workers relocate a temporary barrier wall. The ramp will close from 10 a.m. Saturday through 5:30 a.m. Monday.

Lighting and drainage installations will also close the entrance ramps to southbound SR 874 from eastbound and westbound SW 104th Street/Killian Parkway and from southbound SW 107th Avenue. The ramp will close at 10 p.m. Saturday and will reopen on Monday at 5:30 a.m.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Florida 511 iPhone application is now available for free download on iTunes.

The Florida 511 Traveler Information System provides traffic information on all of Florida’s interstates, toll roads and many major metropolitan roadways.

The app is available for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch in the iTunes App Store. The new app provides the same real-time traffic and travel time information as the 511 phone system and FL511.com.

The 511 app uses iPhone’s GPS tracking to provide users with traffic information within miles of their location. Users can set the app to provide information for a range of up to 200 miles from their location or receive traffic information based on their registered My Florida 511 custom routes. Travel time information is also available based on location and direction of travel. The Florida 511 app offers traffic updates in three ways:

•An audible recording of incidents
•On-screen list of incidents
•Map view displaying incidents

“This is a great addition to Florida 511’s suite of traffic resources such as the toll-free phone call, FL511.com and My Florida 511 personalized services,” said FDOT Secretary Ananth Prasad. “The app allows users to access traffic updates quickly and safely.”

The Florida 511 system is a safety resource from FDOT. The Department reminds all travelers to Know Before You Go by checking the app, making a toll-free call to 511 or visiting FL511.com before leaving to avoid distracted driving.

“If you’re on the road, have a passenger check 511 or pull off the road to call 511 or check the 511 app,” said Sgt. Kim Montes of the Florida Highway Patrol.

Users can still receive personalized Florida 511 updates by creating a My Florida 511 account. Registered users can hear information on their custom routes first when calling 511 and even receive traffic alerts via phone call, text message and/or e-mail. My Florida 511 users can customize alerts based on time of day, day of the week and severity of incident.

The system is also updated during emergencies such as a hurricane or wildfire with information on lane closures, toll suspensions and more.

 $158 to be exact.

In just about two weeks Coral Springs will install cameras at two busy intersections: Riverside Drive and University Drive, and Riverside Drive and Sample Road to catch drivers who run red lights according to CBS4 partner The Miami Herald.  

City police told the paper that these two intersections are high risk areas and account for an increasing number of accidents.

Vehicles that pass the stop line after the light turns red will be captured in two photos and a video clip. A police officer trained in red-light camera enforcement will then look over the images and decide whether or not a violation has occurred.  If found guilty a fine of $158 will be sent to the vehicle’s registered owner.

Violators have 30 days to pay the fine or challenge it in court. If not paid within 30 days, it is then considered a standard traffic infraction and the fine is beefed up to $263.

City officials told the paper only warning notices will be given to red-light runners during the first 30 days of the program, not actual fines.

The city intends to install red-light cameras at seven intersections by the year’s end.

Signs will be posted at intersections with the newly installed cameras, and city officials plan to mount a public awareness campaign about the presence of the cameras.
