MIAMI (CBS4) – These tips are courtesy of Go Red For Women, the American Heart Association’s campaign to educate women about their No. 1 killer – heart disease, and empower them to take action to prevent it.

More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. 1 in 3 American women die of heart disease, compared to 1 in 30 women that die of breast cancer.

Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Eighty percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.

Throughout February, American Heart Month, make every part of your celebration “Red” by enjoying these red food and drink tips from the American Heart Association.

Red Berry Squares:

Make strawberry-flavored gelatin mixed with fresh strawberries and raspberries. Cut into squares before serving.

Frozen Watermelon Bites:

Alternate frozen cubes of watermelon and mint leaves on a skewer and serve cold.

Ravin’ Red Smoothie:

Blend 1 cup low-fat yogurt, ½ cup frozen strawberries, ½ cup frozen raspberries and 1 frozen banana.

Red Pasta:

Cook whole-wheat spaghetti and top with low-sodium marinara sauce, diced tomatoes and sun-dried tomatoes.

Baked Red Apple Dessert:

Fill 1 whole red apple (cored) with ¼ cup chopped almonds, ¼ cup dried cranberries, 1 tsp. honey and 1 tsp. brown sugar. Bake for 15 minutes at 350° or until sugar bubbles.

Perfect Polenta:

Cook polenta and mix with roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted red bell pepper and sun-dried tomato.

Stuffed Red Bell Peppers:

Stuff 1 red bell pepper (cored) with ½ cup cooked brown rice, ¼ diced red onion, ¼ cup ground turkey (browned), 1 tbsp. parsley, salt and pepper. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until pepper is heated through.

Roasted Red Cabbage Salad:

In a large bowl, combine 2 cups chopped red cabbage (roasted), ½ cup red onion (thinly sliced and sautéed), ¼ cup red wine vinegar, 1 tbsp. olive oil and sea salt.

Red Bean Salsa:

Combine 2 cups red beans, ½ cup diced red onions, 1 cup diced red tomato, ¼ cup diced jalapeño (remove seeds), ¼ cup chopped parsley, 2 tbsp. lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Mrs. Obama kicked off the tour Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa. She chose the Hawkeye State for her first stop because it is working to become the nation’s healthiest state by 2016, as measured by the Gallup organization. It ranked 19th in 2010, the most recent rankings.

She sold healthy eating to the kids as something fun, but also dangled the bait that it could help them “pass your tests and get good grades in school.”

There were plenty of sports celebrities on hand to help pump up the crowd, including gymnast Shawn Johnson, figure skater Michelle Kwan, NASCAR champion Carl Edwards, Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg and former WNBA star Tamika Catchings.

The first lady took on the issue of childhood obesity because almost a third of U.S. children are at least overweight, and about 17 percent are obese.

In the two years since Mrs. Obama launched her campaign, she has brought substantial new visibility to the childhood obesity issue and has prodded schools, families, restaurants, grocery stores, doctors, local communities and others to do more to tackle the problem.

Before leaving for the Sunshine State, she was visiting Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas to announce a new program to improve the meals served on military bases. And she was having dinner at an Olive Garden restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas, to chat with parents about the challenges of getting kids to eat right.

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) – A Florida house sub-commitee approved sweeping changes in Florida’s department of health that could put local health matters, and how to pay for them, in the hands of local county lawmakers,if the proposal can win an uphill battle.

The plan approved by the subcommittee Monday would take huge chunks of the responsibilities now handled by the Florida Department of Health, centrally and by county health departments and move them, the jobs they carry, and the costs they incur under direct county control.

The state would abate the costs to the county in assuming the new responsibilities by giving them block grants.

Many county officials are not sure they want the gift.

“We feel like it’s really not ready for prime time,” Leon County Commissioner Bryan Desloge told the House Health & Human Services Quality Subcommittee.

But the subcommittee voted 7-4 to approve the bill, which emerged as lawmakers get ready to hit the halfway point of the legislative session Wednesday. It remains unclear whether the Senate would support such a bill, as its committees have not considered similar proposals.

The 152 page proposal that forms the basis of the bill calls for the Department of Health to put together a plan by Oct. 1 to decentralize public-health services, including transferring responsibilities and employees to county health departments. The decentralization would take effect in January 2014, with the state sending block grants to counties to pay for services.

Lucy Gee, acting deputy secretary at the Department of Health, said the changes could lead to eliminating 12,000 state jobs, though subcommittee Chairman John Wood, R-Winter Haven, said a lot of those jobs would simply be transferred to counties.

Chris Nuland, a lobbyist for the Florida Public Health Association, which includes public health officials from various parts of the state, said his group has a fundamental disagreement with the direction of the bill and is concerned it could jeopardize public health.

“We believe that public health should be a state-directed function,” he said.

But people on both sides of the issue recounted frustrations Monday in dealing with the department. Wood said more local involvement would be an improvement.

“We all know that reform is very, very difficult, and the biggest difficulty with reform is fear,” he said.

“We are happy that markets like the Little Haiti Farmers Market are giving people in all neighborhoods much needed access to fresh food by making locally grown fruits and vegetables readily available to the community,” said Dr. Lillian Rivera, Administrator for the Miami-Dade County Health Department, “and we are happy to be a part of this Saturday’s event by providing blood pressure exams, heart screenings and other health fair activities.”

Highlights at the market will include delectable freshly- picked fruit, locally- grown vegetables and delicious prepared foods. The produce for sale is not only nutritious but affordable. The Little Haiti Farmers Market accepts cash, credit, debit and SNAP food stamps, whose users receive $20 worth of food for a $10 EBT purchase.

The Make Healthy Happen Miami campaign’s goal is to make healthy living as simple as taking a Sunday stroll in a new community garden or buying bright-red tomatoes and juicy oranges at the Little Haiti Farmers’ Market.

MIAMI (CBS4/AP) — There’s been outrage on the streets and online over the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s decision to cut annual funding to Planned Parenthood.

Now CBS4 News has learned this could have a big impact on the local Race for the Cure and local Komen affiliates because we’re told local sponsors have already been making calls about the issue.

Planned Parenthood said Wednesday that it received more than $400,000 from 6,000 donors in the 24 hours after news broke that its affiliates would be losing grants for breast screenings from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer foundation.

Komen, meanwhile, incurred heated criticism from some members of Congress, numerous liberal advocacy groups and some newspaper editorial writers. But it was applauded by many conservative religious and anti-abortion groups that abhor Planned Parenthood for its role as the leading U.S. abortion provider.

Planned Parenthood says the funding cutoff was a result of Komen succumbing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen, in a statement issued Wednesday evening, denied that politics played a role and reiterated that its decision was based on newly adopted criteria for issuing grants.

The criteria bar grants to any organization that’s under local, state or federal investigation. Planned Parenthood is being investigated for alleged financial improprieties by a Republican congressman acting with the encouragement of anti-abortion groups.

“We regret that these new policies have impacted some long-standing grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics,” the Komen statement said.

“The only ones who are getting hurt are women,” said Mayte Camino of Planned Parenthood South Florida. “It’s sad that politics gets in the way of healthcare and access to healthcare.”

Some local Komen supporters are worried.

“I think some of our sponsors, maybe participants in our race, might turn away because of this issue, and we’re hoping they stay with us. just because we’ve truly made an impact,” said Kathryn Becker, past president of the Komen Miami chapter.

Becker hopes the Miami chapter is not tied to the national controversy.

“If people have issues and questions, I’m hoping they come to us, even locally and call us and say, you know what? We don’t agree with this. And we’ll talk to corporate headquarters. We’re not turning a deaf ear to this at all,” she said.

Komen pledged to ensure that women who need breast-health services can still have access to them.

Dr. Eric Winer, a breast cancer specialist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston who is chairman of Komen’s scientific advisory council, said he was confident that breast-screening availability would not be jeopardized.

“The last thing in the world that anyone at Komen wants to do … is to decrease the resources that are available to those women,” he said.

Nonetheless, some members of Komen’s nationwide network were unsettled.

The Komen affiliate in Connecticut posted a notice on its website saying it has enjoyed a “great partnership” with Planned Parenthood of Southern New England and noting that the funding decision was made at Komen’s national headquarters.

“We understand, and share, in the frustration around this situation,” the notice said. “We hope that any investigation prohibiting Planned Parenthood from receiving Komen grants is promptly resolved.”

Planned Parenthood said the Komen grants totaled roughly $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before, going to 19 of its affiliates for breast-cancer screening and other breast-health services. According to Planned Parenthood, its health centers performed more than 4 million breast exams over the past five years, including nearly 170,000 as a result of Komen grants.

Andrea Hagelgans, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman, said the organization was grateful for the outpouring of support since Tuesday evening, when The Associated Press first reported Komen’s decision.

“People respond powerfully when they see politics interfering with women’s health,” she said. “These donations will continue to help expand Planned Parenthood’s critical health care services nationwide, especially those affiliates impacted by the Komen cuts.”

Several members of Congress who support abortion rights voiced dismay at the grant cutoff.

“I was perplexed and troubled to see the decision by Susan G. Komen for the Cure to cut off funding for lifesaving breast cancer screenings through Planned Parenthood because of a political witch hunt by House Republicans,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif. “I truly hope that they will reconsider this decision and put the needs of women first.”

The progressive group MoveOn.org launched an online petition calling on Komen to maintain its grants to Planned Parenthood. It said 60,000 people had signed in a matter of hours.

Komen won praise from anti-abortion activists such as Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life.

“The work of the Komen Foundation has lifesaving potential and should not be intertwined with an industry dealing in death,” said Yoest, a breast-cancer survivor.

She said she had stopped running in Komen’s Race for the Cure because of its ties with Planned Parenthood, but “in the future, I’ll be racing with them to support this courageous decision.”

Komen, based in Dallas and founded in 1982, has invested more than $1.9 billion since then in research, health services and advocacy while becoming the largest breast-cancer charity in the nation. Its Race for the Cure fundraising events have become a global phenomenon.

Editorials about Komen’s decision were published by several newspapers.

“Komen caved to political pressure,” wrote editorial writer Tod Robberson in the Dallas Morning News. “The next time Komen for the Cure comes asking us for an editorial supporting one of their local events, I’m going the think twice.”

The Star-Ledger in New Jersey took a more nuanced view.

“It’s hard to see who the winners are in this mess,” it wrote. “As so often happens when their bodies become a political battleground, women ultimately lose.”

NEW YORK (CBSMiami) – Take a close look at your birth control pills ladies because Pfizer is recalling a million birth control packets because of a packaging error. Some of the packs have an inadequate dose of hormones which could raise the risk of pregnancy.

The company blames both mechanical and human errors at the packaging plant.

The problem affects 14 lots of Lo/Ovral-28 tablets and 14 lots of generic Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol tablets. Both products are manufactured by Pfizer and marketed in the U.S. by Akrimax Rx Products under the Akrimax Pharmaceuticals brand.

For a list of the lots affected, click here

Pfizer found that some packets of the drugs had too many active tablets, while others had too few.

Oral birth control products use a series of 21 drug tablets and 7 inactive sugar tablets to regulate the menstrual period while providing contraception.

A company spokeswoman said the problem was caused by both mechanical and visual inspection failures on the packaging line. She said the problem has been corrected.

Pfizer issued a statement saying the problem is not related to safety but does raise the risk of unintended pregnancy.

The affected packets have expiration dates ranging between July 31, 2013, and March 31, 2014.

The drugs were distributed to warehouses, clinics and retail pharmacies throughout the U.S.

Armand is just one of many dance lovers who swing and sway for better physical and mental health.

“I don’t like to exercise at the gym, so coming here is my workout, it has saved me,” said Armand.

Ballroom dancing can be a great cardiovascular exercise, according to June Rawls, the owner of the Bijoux Dance Studio.

“You get on a treadmill for one hour and Latin dancing for one hour, the benefits are the same. You burn calories and feel the endorphins going through your body,” said Rawls who has owned studio for the last couple of years.

Rawls told CBS4’s Marybel Rodriguez that not only is ballroom dancing beneficial to your body physically; it’s also great for the mind.

“You leave the stress outside, you are in another world once you step inside,” said Rawls.

Rawls also points to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2003 which found dancing might reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Dozens of lawsuits from former NFL players were on full display in a federal court in Miami Thursday. The lawyers for the league are asking for the cases, which dealt with negligence and other charges, to be combined into one case.

The claims from former players center on whether the NFL knew of potential long-term health risks of repeated head trauma, but just recently started trying to deal with it on the field.

The players claim that repeated concussions and other head trauma leads to long-term problems including depression, migraine headaches, memory loss, and serious diseases like Lou Gehrig’s disease and others.

Just last year, former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson committed suicide in his Sunny Isles Beach condo. In his suicide note, he asked for his brain to be given to the NFL’s brain bank for analysis.

Brain researchers said Duerson suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is a degenerative disease of the brain caused by repeated head trauma, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.

If the league is successful in creating one case for all the players, the list of former players in the suit would be a who’s who of former stars.

The list already includes: former Miami Dolphins players Patrick Surtain, Oronde Gadsden, Lamar Thomas, Mark Duper and also features O.J. Anderso and Jim McMahon, according to the Herald.

The NFL has tried to walk a tight-rope when it comes to hard hits. The league celebrates crushing hits, but wants to try their best to keep the players safe.

In recent years, the NFL gave teams procedures to follow before players with any sort of head trauma could return to the game. However, team doctors, employed by teams, can be under pressure to get the best players back on the field in a hurry.

An example of this came last season during a Cleveland Browns game. Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy was leveled by a Pittsburgh Steelers defender and was clearly suffering from some sort of head trauma after the hit.

McCoy was taken out for one play, and then reinserted into the game. It led to the NFL implementing independent observers on every sideline who try to ensure that injured players don’t return to the field too quickly, according to the Herald.

The new rules are the first major change to school lunches in 15 years.

While traditional school lunch items like pizza won’t disappear from the menu, they will now be made with healthier ingredients.

The first lady said kids learn better when they have something other than chips and soda in their stomachs.

“We have a right to expect that the food they get at school is the same kind of food that we want to serve at our own kitchen tables,” she said.

After the announcement, the three went through the line with students and ate turkey tacos with brown rice, black bean and corn salad and fruit — all Ray’s recipes — with children in the Parklawn Elementary lunchroom.

The new rules aren’t as aggressive as the Obama administration had hoped. Congress last year blocked the Agriculture Department from making some of the desired changes, including limiting french fries and pizzas.

A bill passed in November would require the department to allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. The initial draft of the department’s guidelines, released a year ago, would have prevented that. Congress also blocked the department from limiting servings of potatoes to two servings a week. The final rules have incorporated those directions from Congress.

Among those who had sought the changes were potato growers and food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools. Conservatives in Congress called the guidelines an overreach and said the government shouldn’t tell children what to eat. School districts also objected to some of the requirements, saying they go too far and would cost too much.

The new guidelines apply to lunches subsidized by the federal government. A child nutrition bill signed by President Barack Obama in 2010 will help school districts pay for some of the increased costs. Some of the changes will take place as soon as this September; others will be phased in over time.

The guidelines will limit the total number of calories in an individual meal and require that milk be low in fat. Flavored milks will have to be nonfat.

While many schools are improving meals already, others still serve children meals high in fat, salt and calories. The guidelines are designed to combat childhood obesity and are based on 2009 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

Vilsack said food companies are reformulating many of the foods they sell to schools in anticipation of the changes.

“The food industry is already responding,” he said. “This is a movement that has started, it’s gaining momentum.”

The subsidized meals that would fall under the guidelines are served as free and low-cost meals to low-income children and long have been subject to government nutrition standards. The 2010 law will extend, for the first time, nutrition standards to other foods sold in schools that aren’t subsidized by the federal government. That includes “a la carte” foods on the lunch line and snacks in vending machines.

Those standards, while expected to be similar, will be written separately and have not yet been proposed by the department.
