For the past 27 years Santiago Carmona, a husband, father of two and professional saxophone player, has been living with a debilitating heart condition that prevented him from leading a normal life and doing all the things he loves.

“I could not walk far it was hard, I would spend all day in bed waiting for a heart to come,” said Carmona as he sat in a conference room surrounded by doctors and loved ones at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

His prayers were answered one week ago after being on Jackson Memorial Hospital’s heart transplant list for more than a year.  On February 4^th Carmona’s broken heart was mended he received a heart transplant.

Dr. Si Pham and Dr. Javier Jimenez who headed the surgery say it was success.

Carmona was at the peak of his music career when his heart condition took a turn for the worst eight years ago. Because of the ailment, he had to stop doing what loved because he regularly felt weak, had trouble breathing, and lacked energy to do everyday activities.

So when the call came in that they had found him a heart, his outlook on life changed.

“Ever since my son was born I was sick so he is still waiting to play ball with his day and going to the park so that is going to be one of my most immediate plans,”  said Carmona about his 8 year-old son.

That plan will become a reality sooner than expected Carmona went home Tuesday and doctors say he should live a healthy and normal life.  As for his music career, Carmona says he probably will not play professionally but does plan on picking up the sax soon. After all, he made a promise to the team at Jackson Memorial Hospital to write them a song.

“I am just blessed that someone gave up their heart to give me life,” said Carmona before going home with his family.

An increasing number of women are trying this device because doctors are learning that, unlike men, with snoring and abruptly gasping for air in the middle of the night… the signs for women may be being tired, have insomnia, morning headaches or a whole lot of moodiness.

More and more women are being diagnosed with sleep apnea, meaning they can’t sleep through the night because they repeatedly stop breathing.

Christy Hartsook is one of those women. “I would wake up between 4 and 5 times an hour that I was not aware of.”

Hartsook of Palmetto Bay was not getting enough oxygen. She told CBS4′s Cynthia Demos that it wasn’t just a problem for her. Her interrupted sleep started disrupting her husband’s sleep as well.

“He would say, how did you sleep last night? Did you sleep good… cause I didn’t,” said Hartsook.

For Eduardo Borrego in Coral Gables, he had to get a sleep test before his gastric bypass surgery. He was tested for sleep apnea.

“Now I know for sure that I have it,” said Borrego.

Two people. Same problem. Same test. But in the end, different remedies.

First… the test… the In Home Sleep Lab. It’s called the Watermark ARES, which stands for Apnea Risk Evaluation System. They put the ARES on, turn it on, sleep with it, turn it off in the morning and send it to the lab.

Jeffery Rosen is a family physician. “It’s much more convenient and less obstructive to the patient’s life.”

Dr. Rosen says they read the results and come up with a new sleep plan for the patient.

He says women are often misdiagnosed with depression when they really have apnea. If it goes untreated, it can lead to serious weight gain.

Rosen said the in home testing helps tremendously because 40% of the time that people are suppose to go to a sleep lab, they just don’t show up. And 20-million people have sleep apnea. But right now, less than 15% are diagnosed.

Sleep apnea can have serious consequences. It is directly connected to diabetes, obesity, congestive heart failure, hypertension and stroke. It’s a sign that a bigger problem is likely around the corner.

That’s why Christy and Eduardo were so glad to find out how they could stop the apnea. The two had very different doctors orders.

For Eduardo, the doctor prescribed this sleep machine. It pumps in oxygen as he sleeps. It’s called a C-PAP. That stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. It keeps your airway open while you’re sleeping.

“You feel better, more energized, like you actually slept.”

Eduardo hopes that after his gastric surgery, he will no longer have sleep apnea. His doctor said there’s a chance that could happen.

For Christy, she was told she just can’t sleep on her back anymore. She says as long as she sleeps on her side, she has a restful night and so does her husband.

“Yeah, I’m extremely happy I did this test,” Christy told Demos.

Of the 81 sleep breathing disorders out there… 85% of the time, people are diagnosed with apnea… that is if they take the time to get tested. And yes… this device is covered by insurance.

Mrs. Obama visited a Homestead YMCA for the “WebMD Town Hall: Simple Tips For Healthy Families.”  The First Lady and a panel of WebMD experts will hold a question and answer panel in front of a live audience to provide guidance about children’s health and wellness, in addition to steps South Florida families can take to implement healthy eating strategies in their homes.

Other Florida stops on the multi-state tour include Orlando and Longwood.

Mrs. Obama kicked off the tour Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.  She chose the Hawkeye State for her first stop because it is working to become the nation’s healthiest state by 2016, as measured by the Gallup organization. It ranked 19th in 2010, the most recent rankings.

She sold healthy eating to the kids as something fun, but also dangled the bait that it could help them “pass your tests and get good grades in school.”

There were plenty of sports celebrities on hand to help pump up the crowd, including gymnast Shawn Johnson, figure skater Michelle Kwan, NASCAR champion Carl Edwards, Iowa State basketball coach Fred Hoiberg and former WNBA star Tamika Catchings.

The first lady took on the issue of childhood obesity because almost a third of U.S. children are at least overweight, and about 17 percent are obese.

In the two years since Mrs. Obama launched her campaign, she has brought substantial new visibility to the childhood obesity issue and has prodded schools, families, restaurants, grocery stores, doctors, local communities and others to do more to tackle the problem.

Before leaving for the Sunshine State, she was visiting Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas to announce a new program to improve the meals served on military bases. And she was having dinner at an Olive Garden restaurant in Fort Worth, Texas, to chat with parents about the challenges of getting kids to eat right.

The new rule will make sure religious institutions don’t have to pay for contraceptives coverage for employees, but that insurance companies do.

Republicans in Washington have called the rule an assault against religious freedom, but most women’s groups and the general public have come out in favor of the new rule.

Ironically, the very representatives who are fighting the coverage rule are protected by a similar rule in place for all federal health care plans.

Catholic groups, who don’t support birth control, have been leading the charge against the new rules. However, several of the most prominent Catholic hospitals already provide the coverage to their employees.

“We can appreciate the efforts of the White House to quiet the furor over the President’s HHS mandate that would violate the religious freedom of millions of Catholics and other American citizens,” Archbishop Thomas Wenski said. “However it is still not clear whether the proposed ‘compromise’ offered today is acceptable tot he bishops and other Catholic leaders.”

The social issue has attracted the attention of Senator Marco Rubio who has filed legislation that would allow any business to exempt itself from the coverage provision if they had a religious objection to the law.

Rubio’s bill isn’t likely to make it out of the Democratically-controlled Senate, but he has capitalized on the social issue fight with an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference and through numerous media appearances.

Earlier this year, President Barack Obama’s administration issued new rules for insurance providers that mandated birth control coverage without co-pays. The administration issued some exceptions for the mandate including churches.

However, church-run schools and universities, hospitals, and charities were not exempted from the new rule.

This has led to conservatives railing against the rule and saying President Obama’s administration is in a “war against religion.”

Senator Rubio jumped into the fight last week when he filed a bill that would repeal this part of President Barack Obama’s healthcare law.

“I don’t think the government should be forcing any institution to pay for something that institution finds to violate their conscience,” Senator Rubio told CBS4′s Tiffani Helberg.

“This is unprecedented because never before in the history of our country has the government tried to insinuate itself in the domain of one’s personal conscience,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski.

The bill, which may not have much of a chance of passing in the Democratically controlled Senate, pits Rubio against Obama as election season heats up.

“Ultimately, the constitutional right of a religious organization not to be forced to violate their religious principals is of paramount importance in our country,” Rubio said. “It’s one of the founding principals of our nation.”

The White House said it gave religious institutions an extra year to comply with the rule and said individual churches that only serve a narrow population with similar beliefs can also seek exemptions, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.

“We are concerned that much of what is advertised as contraception is really chemical abortion,” Archbishop Wenski said.

The White House also said 28 states already required insurers to cover the cost of contraceptives.

For Rubio, it’s a tough political issue that could endear him even more to the most socially conservative wings of the Republican Party.

His office is portraying the fight as one over freedom of religion rather than over women’s health.

The White House and Democrats are taking the exact opposite approach saying that there shouldn’t be discrimination between insurance companies that choose to cover drugs like Viagra with little to no co-pay, but then refuse to cover birth control.

Women CBS4 spoke to Monday seemed to side with President Obama in the very public fight.

“I think they should provide it and I mean, I’m Catholic myself, but I think that’s something wrong; it should be allowed by the Catholic Church,” said Lourdes Botioll.

“I think everybody has the right to make their own decision on what they want to do with their body and their reproductive organs,” said Daniela Montoya.

Gaby Moreno took it a step further.

“I think that it should be provided because men, for example, don’t have to deal with any of that and they don’t know what it’s like,” Moreno said. “It’s not fair that we have to pay all these things and always deal with these constant worries like birth control. We’re the ones that get pregnant and that’s kind of like a lot of men, unfortunately, are like, ‘Oh, it’s your issue.’”

It sets up an election year fight with Rubio possibly riding a wave of publicity and popularity to the presidential ticket as a vice-presidential candidate.

Rubio initially said he wasn’t interested but may be softening his stance, recently saying he wants to do whatever he can to help the ticket.

However, Komen didn’t indicate if Planned Parenthood would continue to get funding in subsequent years.

Planned Parenthood credits social media for Komen’s reversal.

For the last week, the kids have been participating in South Florida Boxing’s “Get Fit, Stay Fit” program.

It was started by owner Jolie Glassman as a place where kids can go, feel safe, get strong and get fit. It also keeps kids active at an early age, while teaching them boxing.

“Boxing, we did rock climbing yesterday, mountain-biking and yesterday we did Crossfit which is extreme cardio workouts,” said student Austin Zifferblatt.

Jolie said with 17 percent of teenagers overweight, the week-long fitness program is a simple way to try and stem the tide of youth obesity.

“I thought it was a really great experience for all of us,” said student Maria Boano. “For example, yesterday we did Crossfit and I think I’m gonna start doing that.”

The kids will be learning in an area famous for turning out some of the best boxers in the world. From Muhammad Ali to Roy Jones, Jr, and many others, they’ve all spent some time in South Florida.

For Glassman, through all the sweat, tears, and jabs, the teens hopefully learn a valuable lesson.

“If a kid gets strong, their grades are better, their self-esteem, everything,” said Glassman. “It all generates from being strong.”

If it’s a nightmarish thought, you’re like most people aged 18-25 who are hopelessly addicted to something worse than alcohol or tobacco.

According to a new study from the University of Chicago, text messaging and checking Facebook and Twitter are just behind sex and sleep on the list of urges that are basically impossible to resist.

In the study, researchers gave BlackBerrys to more than 200 people and then sent the people back out into their normal daily lives.

The researchers would message them seven times over 14 hours asking if they wanted to look at Facebook, Twitter, etc.

The researchers said out of 10,558 messages, 7,827 reported urges to check social media.

Researchers later discovered through interviews that many of the subjects were willing to forgo most other cravings except sex and sleep to check social media.

A separate study, according to pcmag.com, reported that people with low self-esteem could be at more risk if they use Facebook.

The self-esteem study found that people with low self-esteem posted negative items and that made them appear less likable to their friends.

Jackson Chief Executive Carlos Migoya confirmed to the Herald Jackson would “right-size” its organization through significant layoffs.

Migoya blamed a dropping patient volume due to shorter hospital stays and more out-patient treatments as the reason for the expected staff cuts. He wouldn’t say exactly how many total layoffs would be proposed in two weeks.

According to the Herald, Jackson posted a budget loss of $18.8 million in the first fiscal quarter.

Jackson has cut $16.5 million in payments to the University of Miami, but Jackson still hasn’t put together an additional $36 million in efficiencies that were counted in the current budget, according to the Herald.

In addition, according to the Herald, the hospital system is set to lose tens of millions of dollars in Medicaid payments under a new Florida budget.

Last year, the system lost more than $100 million in Medicaid payments under Governor Rick Scott’s budget.
