MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Several children were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a private school bus rolled over following a crash.

They were on their way home following the first day of school when suddenly the Happy Kid's Transportation van was thrust on its side.

"We are alive by a miracle," said Katiuska Buergo.

According to police, the white Ford van was heading eastbound on 182nd Street when a white Nissan Sentra heading southbound on SW 105th Avenue slammed into it.

Buergo told CBS4's David Sutta the driver of the white Nissan is to blame.

"I was going with her kids and the lady took the stop sign and she hit me," Buergo said. "All my kids went to the hospital."

Inside the van were roughly a dozen students from Terra Environmental Research Institute, a magnet school in Kendall.

"On arrival there was total chaos. Kids running around. People screaming 'everybody's hurt,'" said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Capt. Leonel Reyes.

Firefighters moved quickly. They ended up taking six people to Jackson South – five students and the driver of the white Nissan.

"A lot of injuries. They couldn't move their necks," Buergo said.

It's unclear who was at fault. Police are still investigating.

The transportation driver though feels awful about what happened.

"They are my responsibility. I am full of injuries wherever," she said.

It could have been much worse.  A reminder that as the school year gets underway to be extra careful.

"Please be careful. School started again and kids are being transported home in school buses.  You have to yield the right of way, slow down, wear your seat belts. Be safe," Reyes said.

One student was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Apparently they had a more serious injury than the rest.
