MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A Miami police officer was forced to fire after he was confronted by a knife-wielding man, police say.

Around 10 p.m, police responded to a call about a stabbing in the middle of the street at 115 SW 36th Avenue and that the attack had run off. Police said the woman had been savagely attacked.

When officers arrived they found a woman, 36-year-old Zuarmis Rubio Gonzalez, suffering from multiple stab wounds.

A neighbor of the woman, who did not want to be identified, thought she saw a man punching her neighbor in the stomach.

"I saw her ex-husband coming to the house. She was on the phone outside and he asked her what are you doing and she said what do you mean what am I doing then she started yelling out of nowhere," said the neighbor.

Ana Frontele immediately ran out of her home after hearing the screams.

"No, I just saw her on the floor laying down on the floor. I went to go see what was going on," said Frontele.

"I told my mother because I was in the car, 'mom he hit her in the stomach' and my mom said, 'no he has something in his hand I think he stabbed her," said the neighbor.

Police say 34-year-old Manuel Emilio Alvarez Hernandez stabbed his ex-wife several times, before being scared off by neighbors.

Miami Police Deputy Chief Luis Cabrera told CBS4's Peter D'Oench, "It was a savage attack. She suffered life threatening injuries."

Gonzalez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Investigators said as police were conducting their investigation on the scene when her ex-husband returned.

Hernandez reportedly rammed his car into a patrol car while the officer was writing his report on the incident. Hernandez then allegedly got out of his Chevy Cruze "to confront the officer while bleeding from his wrists and armed with a large knife."

The officer fired his weapon twice hitting Hernandez in the shoulder the other bullet landing in a neighbor's car. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was listed as stable.

Cabrera said Hernandez would face multiple charges.

The officer involved in the shooting, did not sustain any injuries.

Police worked through the night collecting evidence at the scene of what one deputy chief called a savage attack.

Hernandez and the woman were recently divorced and they share a child, according to officers.

"I always see her by herself so I don't know about a relationship," said Frontele.

Miami Police are investigating the domestic violence.

Cabrera said the shooting was being investigated by FDLE, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure in such cases.
