MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A fire erupted inside a UPS facility in Hialeah early Wednesday morning.
Arriving Hialeah firefighters found flames and smoke billowing from an upper window on the side of the building at 6001 East 8th Avenue.
Hialeah fire said there are multiple fires in the building. They added that it started in an area of the building with a lot of discarded package material.
“I just saw a big fire flame and I tried to prevent it, I tried finding a fire extinguisher but it was too late, it just got bigger,” said Fillmore Pesheco.
Pesheco and about 100 other workers inside the building were able to make it out, no injuries were reported.
“The initial fire was in bins that they used to discard materials. whether it’s packing materials or cardboard itself. that was the initial source of the first fires. The rest of them we don’t know what the source is,” said Hialeah Fire Captain Cesar Espinosa.
Several of the workers told CBS4’s Tiani Jones they had an idea of how one of the fires started.
“It was just a golf cart fire and it spread,” said employee David Long.
The sheer size of this 500 square-foot space made it especially difficult for firefighters. So Hialeah Fire ended up requesting help from MiamiDade Fire Rescue.
Once the fire was out, their job wasn’t done.
“Making sure we get all the smoke out of this building, which is a very tedious process considering what kind of building this is, what kind of materials are in the building,” said Hialeah Fire Captain David Rodriguez.
The cause of the fires remains under investigation.
