TAMPA (CBSMiami/AP) — In a desperate attempt to escape from a raging fire, a Tampa woman grabbed her child and jumped from the balcony of their second story apartment near the University of South Florida.

The fire broke out late Tuesday afternoon and took firefighters an hour to get under control.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two dogs died in the fire that displaced about 20 people from their apartments.

The fire started on a stove in a first floor unit at Cordova Apartments. A resident told investigators he left the room while he was cooking french fries. When he returned the kitchen was on fire.
