FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) –It has not been easy for Collette Nichols. A slow recovery from her September 9th accident included three months of pain due to traumatic head, neck and leg injuries.

She was really banged up and is still wearing a neck brace.

On that September night, Nichols was biking home from her job at a local casino around 11 p.m.

Someone in a vehicle came from behind and struck her on the bike and then continued on their way.

"For the individual that did it and just walked away, I am not even angry so much about it, if anything disappointed," said Nichols.

Despite the neck brace, Collette can still go back to her job. She just needed $275 to get a cat scan and a doctor's letter clearing her for work.

Unable to work since the accident, she didn't have the money to pay the bill.  Unable to pay the bill and get the doctor's note, she wasn't able to go back to work.

That's when the Broward Sheriff's Office Victim's Services stepped in and paid for the doctor's bill.

"This check is for Dr. Burkett, which affords you the opportunity to go to the doctor so you can get back to work," said Rosemary Evans with BSO.

But wait, there's more!

Nichols' only mode of transportation, her bicycle, was destroyed in the accident.

BSO brought out a new bike for Nichols, along with a helmet for safety.

Nichols always biked to work and though it will be a while until she can get back on the bike, she says that she definitely will.

"And now I get a bicycle so that is really nice," she said. "I greatly appreciate it."
