MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) – Miramar police say Milton Walker, who's accused of hitting a 7-year-old boy riding his bike before leaving the accident scene, turned himself in to investigators Wednesday night.

Walker faces several charges, including failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving serious injury.

Jayden McFarlane's mother, Felissa, says she feels great relief.

"I was crying," she said. "I was happy, you know."

Jayden suffered serious injuries, like a concussion and a broken collarbone. His mother is relieved this portion of the case is over.

"I don't know what came over this guy and or what happened but whatever happened, I'm glad he turned himself in and he admitted what he did," McFarlane said.

Walker's attorney, Terry Moons, said Walker is retired from the Miami-Dade school system and now works at Port Everglades.

Moons said Walker was on his way to work on Sunday, November 20th, when he hit Jayden.

However, Moons said Walker thought he hit a garbage can.

Moons said as soon as Walker learned what happened he wanted to turn himself in the following day.

"We were ready to go," Moons said. "It was before the holidays. We'd seen the mother was quite upset and we didn't want her out there thinking somebody was out there trying to flee from justice. He's extremely sorry. Very remorseful. It's a very, very tragic situation."

Moons said Miramar police asked them to hold off on turning Walker in so they could do a thorough investigation.

McFarlane said her son is improving and she hopes Walker learns a serious lesson.

"You know the law of the road," she said. "You don't hit anything and just drive away, let alone a child – my one and only child."

Walker is expected to go before a judge first thing Thursday morning.

Jayden is at home recovering. His mom says he should return to school next week.
