MIAMI (CBSMiami) - It's November 30th, the day when most of Florida breathes a collective sigh of relief because it signals the end of the Atlantic hurricane season.

Turns out 2016 was a busy year in the tropics.

The season brought 15 named storms and seven hurricanes, three of which were classified as major storms.

NOAA's forecast called for 10 to 16 named storms, 4 to 8 Hurricanes and 1 to 4 Major Hurricanes. On average we see 12 named storms, 7 Hurricanes and 2 Major Hurricanes.

This was the first above-normal Atlantic hurricane season since 2012 and produced five landfalling U.S. storms.

It was also the first time in more than a decade a storm made landfall in Florida. Hurricane Hermine slammed into Florida's panhandle near the town of St. Marks in September.

A month later, Hurricane Matthew took aim at Florida. Matthew came within 25 miles of Cape Canaveral and then hugged the Central Florida coastline as it moved north, leaving behind significant damage.

Matthew skirted up the Atlantic coast without making landfall until it arrived in early October in South Carolina as a Category 1 storm.
