Tragic Accident Leaves Void In South Florida Football Community

When it comes to the South Florida high school football community, there is not a tighter knit group anywhere in the country.

That was put to the test on Monday night.

With the day winding down in Homestead, three Keys Gate student-athletes were involved in a car accident that shook the community.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the accident on the southbound lanes of Southwest 137th Avenue, near Campbell Drive, reporting the tragic news that 17-year-old Isaiah West and 18-year-old Samir Barrera were dead.

The only passenger to survive this horrific crash was 18-year-old Isaac Lipscomb, who was flown to Ryder Trauma Center and had surgery for a spinal injury Tuesday.

On their way to a fishing trip to start the holiday week, things went wrong – and in an instant, lives were changed forever.

When friends and family found out about the news, they were devastated – and rushed to the hospital to see Lipscomb, who is considered one of the top prospects in South Florida at wide receiver for the Class of 2018.

In three seasons – two at Homestead High School and his junior year at Keys Gate Charter – the 6-foot-2 receiver amassed over 50 receptions and eight touchdowns. Lipscomb's talents earned him scholarship offers from West Virginia, Cincinnati and UCF.

"Everyone in South Florida will be praying for all the families," said former Champagnat head football coach Mike Tunsil, who knew all the young men involved. "This is when this area of the country shows how we are all family – especially at times like this."

A Go Fund Me account has been set up for Libscomb, who has a long road to recovery ahead of him and the bills will start to mount.

We will continue to update the progress of Lipscomb and when the services will be held for West and Barrera.
