MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- With turkey and 'fixins' on our minds, many Americans are looking to travel - about 48.7 million, according to AAA.

The organization says they expect that many people to journey 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That's an increase of one million travelers compared with last year and it's the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.

The increase could be due to rising wages, an uptick in consumer spending and an overall strength in consumer confidence, according to the group.

And most plan to get there by driving, about 89 percent,  according to the group. That's about 43.5 million Americans.

They may also be saving while doing it.  AAA estimates U.S. drivers have saved more than $28 billion so far at the pump this year.

"Most will travel on the tried and true holiday road trip, thanks to gas prices that are holding at close to $2 per gallon. Others will fly, take the bus or set off on a cruise to celebrate with their loved ones," said AAA President and CEO Marshall Doney.

As for a destination, many travelers are expected to head over to some of this year's top destinations in the West including Las Vegas, San Francisco and San Diego.
