MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- For the first time, President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump met following a contentious election.

Trump, sitting side-by-side with Obama, called the president a 'very good man' after their meeting which lasted about an hour and a half.

The president-elect said he plans to seek guidance from President Obama.

"I look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future," said Trump.

President Obama said he felt 'encouraged' after the meeting in the Oval Office.

He said the meeting with Trump was to "facilitate a transition that ensures our president-elect is successful."

Trump's wife Melania was also able to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama as their husbands met.

Trump is also scheduled to meet with House Speaker Paul Ryan later in the day.

Meantime, anger over Donald Trump's stunning election continued to boil over into the early hours.

"He's a racist, homophobic, xenophobic nightmare," said a protester.

Moments after burning an effigy of the President-elect, demonstrators in LA marched along the 101 Freeway, shutting down traffic for hours.

Businesses in New Orleans were damaged. Fireworks were set off in Oakland and in New York. Police arrested several protesters blocking traffic along various Trump properties. Hundreds of protesters lined the streets off Fifth Avenue across the street from Trump Tower.

Just a day before, President Obama asked Americans to try to work together under a new president.

"Sometimes we move in ways that some people think is forward and other people think is moving back and that's okay," said the president on Wednesday.

Hillary Clinton urged her supporters to give Trump a chance in her concession speech just a day before.

"Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead," said Clinton.

Trump stayed out of the public eye Wednesday, privately meeting with his staff to go over potential cabinet appointments.

In a tweet on Wednesday, his transition team pledged to "begin the urgent task of rebuilding our nation and renewing the American dream."

Trump, along with Vice President-elect Pence will also meet with House Speaker Paul Ryan Tuesday during their visit to Washington, D.C.
