Miami Lakes Mayoral Race Headed For Runoff Election

MIAMI LAKES (CBSMiami) -- Miami Lakes voters will be headed back to the polls for a Mayoral runoff election.
With all seven precincts reporting, Councilman Manny Cid earned about 46-percent of the vote while incumbent mayor Michael Pizzi received 31-percent and former mayor Wayne Slaton received 23-percent. Because Cid didn't receive the simple majority, 50-percent plus one vote, needed to win outright, there will be a runoff election on Nov. 29.
Slaton and Pizzi are the only two mayors the town has ever known. Slaton was named Miami Lakes' first mayor after it incorporated in 2000.
In 2013, Pizzi was serving out his second term when he was forced to leave office that August after being indicted on charges of accepting illegal money and campaign funds during an undercover FBI investigation.
Slaton was re-elected to the position in a special election after Pizzi was removed from office.
A year later, Pizzi was acquitted of all charges and he sued to be reinstated. In April 2015, Slaton was out, and Pizzi was back in.
