NORTH LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami/AP) — A North Lauderdale grandmother and her granddaughter were rescued from a lake behind their home by an off duty Broward Sheriff's deputy.

Vincent Graham said he was relaxing at home before heading to work as a detention deputy on Tuesday when his wife Patricia screamed. He dashed into his backyard area and saw the child's head emerge from the water.

Graham says he grabbed the child with one hand and handed her to his wife. He used the other hand to feel underwater for the woman who had been holding her up, 72-year-old Jacqueline Agard.

The pair was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Agard told deputies that Miley, 2, ran after the family's cat and then jumped into the water. The toddler was able to get out and then jumped back in because she wanted to see the plastic duck decoys in the middle of the lake.

Agad jumped in after her but said she didn't have the strength to get them both back to shore. That's when Graham came to the rescue.
