Good Samaritan Struck In Hit & Run While Helping Other Crash Victim

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A man's good deed to help two others involved in a car accident ended with him in the hospital as the victim of a hit-and-run.

The coincidental chain of events first started when a Ford pickup truck, driven by Raymond Brown, 58, was struck by a motorcycle, driven by Tonio McGowen, 33, around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said McGowen hit the truck's back bumper when Brown was attempting a left turn to go north on S.W. 29th Terrace.

Following the collision, Brown stopped his truck.

Parked nearby, Norman Maryland, 57, witnessed the event and ran over to help.

While Maryland was standing on the side of the road, police said a Chrysler Pacifica struck him and the motorcycle, then continued west on West Broward Blvd before turning north onto N.W. 30th Avenue.

The hit-and-run driver didn't get far, though, and the vehicle broke down moments later. The driver and passengers fled on foot.

Police are now looking for them.

Both McGowen and Maryland, the Good Samaritan, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
