DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Just when things were looking up for the Miami Dolphins, bad news has struck the team again.

Pro Bowl safety and defensive captain Reshad Jones will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury.

Jones has been one of Miami's best and most consistent players for the past several years, on a defense that has desperately needed playmakers.

During Sunday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jones appeared to injure his shoulder when trying to make a tackle.

He would visit two doctors and the diagnosis is a torn rotator cuff.

Replacing Jones at safety will be a near impossible task for the Dolphins as he is regarded as one of the best in the league.

"We'll go through this week of practice and kind of figure out what our best personnel package will be back there," coach Adam Gase said. "We have a lot of moving pieces as far as what we like do with defensive packages."

Options for Miami are Walt Aikens and Michael Thomas, and a timeshare between the two is also a possibility.

"Nobody can replace the talent," teammate Michael Thomas said.

This is the second year in a row that the Dolphins lost a key defensive player not even halfway through their schedule.

Cameron Wake suffered a torn Achilles last October and missed the final nine games of the season.
