Swimming: Gulliver Boys & Girls Have Strong Showing In Tune-Up Meet

In one final tune-up before the district, region and state swim meets, Gulliver Prep swept the team titles at the Ransom-Everglades Invitational.

The defending state champion girls' team won the 11-team meet with 660.50 points followed by Ransom-Everglades (400.50) and TERRA (301).

The boys' team won with 501 points, just six points ahead of Belen Jesuit (495). Ransom- Everglades was third (418).

Gulliver Prep, favored to repeat as state champions, had four individual girls' winners.

Junior Marcella Ruppert-Gomez won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.81. Senior Brooke Ellis won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.78. Junior Alicia Mancilla won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.79. Sophomore Olivia Hernandez won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:11.31.

Gulliver Prep won the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Kyla Valls of Ransom Everglades, who recently committed to University of Virginia, won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.57 and 100-yard butterfly in 56.33.

Gulliver Prep was led by junior Miguel Cancel, who represents Puerto Rico internationally. Cancel won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.01 and 100-yard backstroke in 53.06.

Gulliver Prep's other winners were junior Trahern Gribble in the 100-yard butterfly in 52.43. He was also second in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.57.

Gulliver Prep won the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays.

St. Brendan's Irvin Hoost was a double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.51 and 100-yard freestyle in 47.94.

The 3A and 4A district meets get under way Monday in Dade and Broward. The 1A and 2A district meets are next week.

GMAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Columbus and Ferguson tied for the boys' team titles and Coral Reef won the girls' title at Miami-Dade North Aquatic Center.

The boys' teams tied with 62 points followed by Miami Beach with 61.

Ferguson's Marcelo Lauzurique was a double winner in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.11 and 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.61. Joseph Cardozo won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49.10.

Columbus's Brandon Vives won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.28 and the Explorers clinched the tie with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Coral Reef won the girls' title with 108 points, the only team to crack 100. Defending champion TERRA was second with 73, just one point ahead of MAST Academy.

Coral Reef won the girls 200-yard medley (2:00.62) and 200-yard freestyle relays. Cloe Bedard-Khalid and Sidney Starman each won two events.

Starman won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.33 and 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.02. Bedard-Khalid won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:11.72 and 100-yard butterfly in 58.46.

Hailey Jerew of Cutler Bay Academy was the only other double winner in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.14 and 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.67.

CLASS A SHOWDOWN

Powerhouse Pine Crest swept Boca Raton St. Andrew's School in one of the biggest dual meets of the season. The Panthers girls team won 204-106 to finish the dual meet season at 13-0. The boys' team won, 170-135 to finish 12-1.

District 12-3A: at Ransom-Everglades and Tamiami, Monday, 4 p.m.
