HAVANA (CBSMiami) – Cuba has started to feel the effects of Matthew as the hurricane made landfall near the eastern tip of the island nation Tuesday night.

Hurricane Matthew is slowly crossing the island, causing Cuba officials to declare an alert for six provinces.

People have been boarding up all day long. They’ve also been putting sandbags on the roof so they don’t go flying off and cause damage to people, buildings and cars in the area.

There have been massive evacuations along the coast. According to the Cuban government, they expect 180,000 people to be evacuated.

It’s going to be a very long-running Cuba as people try to hunker down and wait out the effects of a devastating storm
