FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A tragic ending for a couple who tried to swim across the Intracoastal Waterway in Deerfield Beach.

The man and woman were trying to cross the water in 200 block of 19th Avenue to reach Deerfield Island Park when something went wrong.

"I saw a girl had swam and was sitting on the island across the way and there was a head in the middle of the water," said Rhonda Tedeschi.

Tedeschi was walking her dog when the noticed the pair's bikes and belongings on shore, that's when she realized someone was in trouble. She said she could see a man's head in the water and heard cries for help.

"It was bobbing up and down and when I walked a little further I saw them yelling 'help, help'. I didn't see the head anymore and I called 911," said Tedeschi.

Fire rescue raced to the scene while the woman who made it across tried to help in the search.

"The woman was crying and she started to swim across, to come back and she kept saying I didn't know he couldn't swim," said Tedeschi.

The man's body was located a short time later and brought back to shore. The couple's names have not been released.
