Carolinas Keeping Eye On Tropical Depression 8

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A hurricane hunter aircraft is checking out Tropical Depression 8 as it tracks towards the coast of the Carolinas.

At 5 a.m. Monday, the center of the system was about 230 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Maximum sustained winds were 35 mph with higher gusts. 

The system was moving to the west-northwest at 10 mph.

A turn toward the northwest and a slower forward speed are expected on Monday, with a turn toward the north forecast on Tuesday or Tuesday night. On the forecast track, the center of the depression will be near the Outer Banks of North Carolina late Tuesday or Tuesday night.

A Tropical Storm Watch is up for the coast of North Carolina from Cape Lookout to Oregon Inlet.

The depression is expected to produce up to 3 inches of rain, with some areas getting up to 5 inches, over far eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks.
