Hurricane Gaston Gains Strength, New Depression Forms Off U.S. Coast

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Gaston continues to gain strength but does not appear to be a threat to land.
At 8 p.m. Sunday, the center of Gaston was located about 600 miles east of Bermuda.
The storm has maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour and is moving northwest at 5 miles per hour.
A slow northwestward motion is expected through Sunday night, followed by a slow northward or northeastward motion Monday and Monday evening.
Some additional strengthening is possible during the next day or so.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center of Gaston and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.
Additionally, a new tropical depression has formed to the west of Bermuda.
As of 11 a.m. the center of the depression was located about 350 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
It's currently moving to the west at 9 miles per hour and a west-northwestward motion is expected Sunday afternoon and into the evening, followed by a turn towards the northwest and a decrease in forward speed on Monday.
On the forecast track, the center of the cyclone will pass offshore of the Outer Banks of North Carolina on Tuesday.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.
There are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect for either storm.
