Elephant Refuge Center Pulls Out Of Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — An elephant refuge company says will they no longer do business in Florida.

The Orlando Sentinel reports the National Elephant Center filed notice of withdrawal this month with Florida's Division of Corporation.

Disney's Animal Kingdom and zoos across the country helped found the center, which started taking in elephants in 2013. It was created to provide short-term and long-term care for elephants.

Disney officials told The Associated Press on Friday they have no comment. Officials with the elephant group didn't immediately respond to messages.

The Sentinel reports three of the five elephants sent to the nonprofit facility after it opened have died. Last November, the facility sent the remaining two elephants away — one returned to Animal Kingdom and the other went to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens.
