MIAMI (CBSMiami) – U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo held a round table discussion Thursday afternoon where he discussed a number of topics he thinks need to be addresses in the fight against Zika.

In attendance at the round table, which took part at Curbelo's office -- representatives of members of Congress, a Deputy County Mayor, local health professionals and local experts.

Curbelo, who says he does not have any more access to information from the health department than what the local media has, says local leaders need to be forthcoming and realistic when it comes to the threat Zika poses to all residents in South Florida.

"The residents rely on the government for good information, to know where the threats are, how they can remain safe and healthy so it's imperative for us as leaders to make sure that we're as forthcoming as possible," said Curbelo.  "I understand that there are some economic risks out there we don't want to alarm people and we don't want tourists and others who come here to do business to stay away from South Florida, but at the same time we need to be honest with our residents and we need to make sure that they are taking all the precautions that they can to avoid getting infected."

Curbelo says everyone needs to do their part in the fight against Zika which means making sure you use mosquito repellent, make sure you don't have any standing water where mosquitoes could breed and taking all of the necessary precautions health officials recommend.
