MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The victims of the fatal Tequesta attack were both originally from Miami-Dade. The wife happens to come from a big family that's been deeply involved in a local community for a long time.

North Miami Beach city council members took a moment to remember Michelle and John Stevens.

The gruesome crime hit close to home for members of the North Miami Beach community.

"It's shocking. It really is shocking. Just the connection of knowing her from school. The connection with Mayor Mishcon through the city of North Miami Beach.  It's devastating," said Councilwoman Barbara Kramer.

Michelle's father is former North Miami Beach Mayor Jeff Mishcon.

Council members said the family is well known for their involvement in the community.

"He's an amazing human being. He's given so much to the community. And our hearts are with his family," said Councilwoman Marlen Martell. "To know what he's going through, it must be devastating to know of this tragedy of his own daughter."

There was an outpouring of support on social media for the couple. According to Michelle's Facebook page, she and her husband had recently celebrated 19 years together.

"When you know a family, you know, these are things you hear about, you read about, but when it touches home, it's just that much more devastating and it just leaves a chill on your neck, on your shoulders, in your heart," Kramer said.
