MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) -- It was a big mess in Miami Gardens Friday morning when a man with a machete claimed there was an explosive device in his car.

Miami-Dade Police were responding to a report of a man with a machete but they said things changed dramatically after the man's claim.

That's when the bomb squad was called in.

Around 9 a.m., officers responded to the scene at NE 2nd Court and Miami Gardens Drive (183rd Street).

Police said the suspect robbed a nearby Walmart store of a series of items including fishing supplies and drove away to the aforementioned address.

Police say he dropped his machete and when officers confronted him, he said "I have a bomb."

A police source told CBS4's Peter D'Oench that changed everything and the bomb squad was called out and did not find any device, but they did check everything in his car and found luggage sneakers, kerosene bottles and camping fuel cans.

At around noon, they were in the process of clearing the scene.

The suspect's car was towed away and he was taken into custody. He is facing a series of  charges following the theft and bomb threat.

As for the stolen items, Walmart store officials were at the scene picking up the reportedly stolen items.
