Future First: Partnering With Broward County Public Schools

Today we are visiting with Broward County Public Schools Superintendent, and Children's Services Council Member, Mr. Robert W. Runcie. With a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard and a master's in business administration from Northwestern University, Mr. Runcie began his career in management consulting and technology. He then worked in the Chicago Public Schools system in different roles, including as Chief of Staff to Arne Duncan, later President Obama's Secretary of Education. In October 2011 he was selected as Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools and in 2016 he was selected as Superintendent of the Year by the Florida Association of Districts Superintendents.

There are so many points where the work of the CSC and Broward County Schools intersect to complement each other to improve the lives of children that it's hard to know where to begin. Let's start with some of the initiatives we have collaborated on since the beginning of your tenure:

1) Ending the school house to jail house pipeline: PROMISE

2) Minority Male Success Task Force

3) Early Care and Education

4) The Grade Level reading Campaign (Dan Gohl) and its four pillars:

  1. School Readiness
  2. Parent Engagement
  3. Attendance
  4. Preventing Summer Slide

Some areas include those that are CSC funded, for example:

1) School Nurses

2) Elementary (MOST), Middle (Youth FORCE) and High School (21st Century, Leap High, STEP, BOSS) afterschool programs

3) Swim Central

4) Hunger relief programs, such as Harvest Drive, supper program in partnership with Florida Impact

5) Broward Back to School Community Extravaganza (uniforms, backpacks, supplies and shoes)
