MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The Miami Marlins are making some upgrades to their pitching staff.

The Marlins, who are currently tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card spot in the National League, have made a major trade with the San Diego Padres.

Miami has acquired pitchers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea to fortify the team's starting rotation.

The pair didn't come cheap though, as Miami will send top prospects Josh Naylor and Luis Castillo back to the Padres as well as starting pitcher Jared Cosart and reliever Carter Capps.

Miami also will receive minor league pitcher Tayron Guerrero in the seven-player deal.

Naylor was the Marlins first round pick in 2015 and is currently playing in single-A ball.

Cashner (4-7, 4.76 ERA) and Rea (5-5, 4.98 ERA) have been solid for a Padres team that has been towards the bottom of the standings all season.

Earlier this season Miami acquired relief pitcher Fernando Rodney from San Diego to fortify the back end of the bullpen.

Owner Jeffrey Loria is clearly going all-in this season, giving up two of the Marlins best prospects in an already depleted minor league system.

Cashner, 29, will be a free agent following this season while Rea, 26, will be under club control through 2022.
