Democratic Delegates Cut High Costs, Cram Into Hotel Rooms

PHILADELPHIA (CBSMiami/AP) — Some delegates headed to the Democratic National Convention are cramming up to five in a room as they face high hotel bills running into the thousands of dollars.

A delegate from California said her room costs nearly $4,000 for five nights. She's sharing the room with four others and plans to bring a sleeping bag so they can trade off sleeping on the floor.

The prices were driven up by expected high occupancy rates, which allow hotels to command a premium.

Some hotel managers say they were surprised the Democratic National Convention didn't try to bargain with them to lower rates.

The DNC says it negotiated with every hotel. But it says negotiations can focus not only on rates but also on elements such as function space and food and beverages.
