Lauren's List: Making The Most Of Your LinkedIn Profile

Follow CBSMIAMI.COM: Facebook | Twitter

In today's "Lauren's List", we're looking at how to make the most of social media.

We're not talking about Facebook or Snapchat. You've got those pretty much mastered.

But what about LinkedIn?

A reported 259 million people have a LinkedIn account, but many of us are using it to its full potential?

According to CareerRealism.com, 89% of recruiters report hiring someone thorugh LinkedIn, and more than 10 million people say they've found a job through the site.

But some recruitment experts say we're using the site all wrong.

Here are some tips to make your profile shine.

  1. Maximize your headline- If your headline simply says your current job title, you're missing a huge opportunity. Spice it up by adding words like passion, experience, and "let's talk!".
  2. Don't make the summary section a re-hash of your resume- You should share your story and core beliefs as they relate to your industry, and maybe a list of your short term and long term goals.
  3. Get recommendations- Recommendations are the lifeblood of LinkedIn and the best way to establish your credibility. Reach out to your former bosses or clients to ask if they'd be willing to write a recommendation on your behalf.
  4. Leave out non-relevant skills and endorsements- You know the saying "dress for the job you want, not the job you have"? The same applies to LinkedIn. Make sure your skills and endorsements reflect the type of job you're looking for. And here's a "pro-tip" for you: endorsing the skills of other people in your network is the fastest way to have your skills endorsed as well.

If you've ever found a job through a LinkedIn connection tell us on Facebook at facebook.com/LaurenPastranaNews or on Twitter @LaurenPastrana.
