CLEARWATER (CBSMiami/AP) — A driver trying to make a fast getaway from police officers is now behind bars.

Authorities say an officer shot at a suspect who drove recklessly toward police during a traffic stop in Florida.

Police say officers spotted 23-year-old Chris Chittarath driving recklessly late Sunday in Clearwater Beach.

When Chittarath pulled into a beach report parking lot, officers attempted to make contact with him.

A police statement says Chittarath fled into a nearby parking lot, driving over some bushes and jumping a curb. It adds he then drove toward an officer.

Investigators say the officer, fearing for his life, fired his weapon. Poilce say the vehicle fled and was eventually stopped.

Chittarath faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding and driving with a suspended license.

It's unclear whether Chittarath has an attorney. He wasn't injured in the shooting.
