HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) - A rude awakening for residents of one Hollywood apartment complex after the driver on an SUV plowed into it early Tuesday morning.
Hollywood police spokeswoman Meredith Elrich said the 57-year-old driver experienced a medical issue while driving and crashed into the building at 7300 Davie Road Extension just after 6 a.m.
The SUV plowed through an aluminum fence, went through the parking lot and took down a few trees before it slammed into an apartment.
"It pushed everything to the side, I don't know how I got out," said Jack Abouzeide.
Abouzeide, 81, and his 83-year old wife Yvonne said they were terrified when the SUV smashed into their bedroom.
"All I know is I was asleep and a car was in my room when I woke up," said Yvonne Abouzeide.
She said when she awoke all she could see was smoke and part of a tree as she laid on the floor trapped between the mattress and a sofa.
"He (Jack) was able to stand on the car and climb out but it was very narrow for me so I tried getting the door open," said Yvonne.
She also noticed a man who didn't belong in their room - the driver.
"When I realized what was happening I saw the man sitting in the car, door closed," said Yvonne. "He was unconscious, I presumed, because he was not moving."
The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital. Yvonne and her husband were also taken to the hospital as a precaution. They were checked out and then sent home - grateful to be alive.
"The only thing I could say is 'Thank you God,'" said Yvonne.
No word on if the driver will be cited or charged.
