MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A house fire in northeast Miami has destroyed a home and sent a man to the hospital.

The fire began at around 1 a.m. Sunday at a home off of N.E. 134th Street.

A woman who had lived at the home for 20 years was out of town for a graduation. The homeowner's daughter, Marilyn Vilbrun, was called early Sunday morning as authorities fought the blaze.

"Thank god my mom wasn't home," said Vilbrun. "She would have been terrified. She's sad about it because she's been living here for 20 years. This is her house, her baby. She's pretty sad but everything will work out fine."

She says the man staying in this house was asleep at the time of the fire. He said he heard an explosion before the fire ignited.

He suffered 2nd degree burns and was hospitalized.

"He got burned in one arm," said Vilbrun. "It's not that bad but a burn is a burn."

Another person inside was unharmed.

The house, however, was destroyed. Inside, the refrigerator melted, the air conditioner wall unit was toasted and clothes in closets were turned to ashes.

Police are investigating what caused the fire.
