DAVIE (CBSMiami) -- Firefighters are crediting man's best friend with saving the lives of a father and son during a house fire in Davie.

It happened Sunday, June 5th, near 170th Avenue and S.W. 48th Street.

Officials said the family dog alerted the home's owner and his young son about the danger.

"The dog came in acting somewhat erratically, kinda grabbed their attention. That's when he noticed the odor of smoke and when he moved out of the room, he noticed that there was smoke in the house," said Davie Fire Battalion Chief Andrew Popick.

By the time firefighters arrived, the man and his son had already managed to get of the house.

"On arrival, our engine company was met by the homeowner who had exited the structure with his son advising that the fire was inside, in the kitchen area," said Chief Popick.

Fire crews were able to quickly contain the blaze. Although the damage will prevent the occupants from staying inside the home for now, no one was actually hurt.

"Definitely sounds like the dog alerted the two occupants early that something wrong was going on and then they were able to realize that they, in fact, had a fire in the house and were able to self-evacuate," Chief Popick added.
