Dolphins' Home Stadium Renovations Moving Along Nicely

MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins' home stadium has been undergoing some major renovations in 2016.

Four giant video boards in each corner of the stadium and a shade canopy are just some of the major installments happening right now, and fans will be able to see a (mostly) finished product when the Dolphins take the field for their first home preseason game on September 1st against Tennessee.

Canopy construction is expected to finish in early August, with time to install the playing field and have everything ready to go for football.

According to Bill Senn, Senior VP of Stadium Renovations, there have been 400 people rotating a schedule working 24 hours a day and seven days a week since last December.

"It is really and truly going to transform this building into a world class state of the art facility," said Senn. "You've been here for an August, September game at 1 o' clock on a Sunday. And if you are in the 300 level, you know how warm it gets. Truly, the fans sitting in the 300 level, they are going to be amazed at the difference of what the shade canopy will do for them."

There are a total of 102 sequences that need to be finished before the renovations are complete and as of now 79 of them are in place.

Senn and the Dolphins have been adamant that the construction is on schedule despite Miami's preseason game against Atlanta on August 25th getting moved to Orlando.

"Everyday there have been things that have happened and it's taken either Bill Senn or even (owner) Stephen Ross personal involvement to figure out how do we stay on schedule in spite of it. And how do we move things around, how to make changes to make sure we get this done on time," said Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel.

The stadium's four video boards, which total 22,400 square feet, will be fully installed and operational by late July.

In comparison to the rest of the AFC East, the next highest amount of total video board square footage is at the Jets' Metlife Stadium, which has a total of 14,160 square feet.

To put the size into perspective, compared to the 40 or 50-inch screens in many peoples homes, each video board at the Dolphins home stadium will be 1,472 inches.

Senn describes the shade canopy as the stadium's "iconic feature".

It will light up at night and each corner will have its own spire that rises 200 feet above the roof surface.

The spires will light up as well, and will look like "four Eifel Towers," according to Garfinkel.

"The only thing that could be better is when we are playing in the game and winning," said team owner Stephen Ross.
