DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) -- Broward Sheriff's Office detectives will be working well into the night trying to figure out exactly what led up to a fatal shooting in Deerfield Beach Monday evening.

First it was reported that a home owner shot and killed a home invader. But as the night developed, things became muddled for investigators.

"I did not say this was a home invasion, I said this is one of many possibilities. It could be a home invasion, some kind of theft or something completely different," said BSO spokesperson Gina Carter "Right now we do not know what led to this shooting and what led to this man's death."

When CBS4's news truck arrived at scene at 4160 NW 6th Street, police had saturated the quiet neighborhood.

"The helicopter has been circulating around for some time now and the whole road is blocked off," said a resident who only identified themselves as Carrie.

Authorities had a chopper in the air, dogs on the ground and guns drawn as neighbors were kept away from their homes.

"Once the call came in we did establish a perimeter and we found this adult female. She may or may not be involved in what happened here tonight," Carter explained.

BSO detectives talked to the shooter. Authorities have not identified him or the deceased.

Lots of questions remain.

"It is too soon for us to say whether or not this was a burglary attempt, some other kind of situation that led to this man's death," Carter said.
